You've passed your driving test — congratulations! But if you've only ever driven in Harrogate or York during your lessons, you may feel underprepared for motorway driving, driving at night or navigating challenging weather conditions. That's exactly what Pass Plus is designed to address.

What Is Pass Plus?

Pass Plus is a practical training course developed by the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) specifically for newly qualified drivers. It's designed to broaden your driving experience across different environments and road types, building on the foundation you developed during your lessons.

What Does It Cover?

The Pass Plus course covers six modules:

  • Town driving — busy streets, junctions, pedestrians and cyclists
  • All weathers — rain, fog, ice and other adverse conditions
  • Rural roads — country roads, narrow lanes and farm crossings
  • Night driving — reduced visibility, lighting and hazard perception
  • Dual carriageways — higher speeds, lane discipline and overtaking
  • Motorways — joining, leaving, lane changing and motorway etiquette

There's no formal test at the end — your instructor assesses your progress throughout the course and certifies you on completion.

How Long Does It Take?

The minimum duration is six hours, though many pupils choose to do more. The course is typically completed over one to three sessions depending on your availability.

Will It Reduce My Insurance?

This is the most commonly asked question about Pass Plus. The answer is: it depends on your insurance provider.

A number of insurers offer discounts for Pass Plus holders, though the scheme is not as universally recognised as it once was. Before booking, it's worth checking with your insurer whether they offer a discount — and whether the saving would offset the cost of the course.

Even if it doesn't reduce your premium, the improvement in skill and confidence that Pass Plus provides has a real value of its own — particularly for those who've never driven on a motorway.

Is It Worth It?

In our experience, yes — particularly for the motorway and night driving modules. Many newly qualified drivers have never experienced motorway driving (motorways are not part of the standard driving test), and the first time you drive on a motorway alone can be daunting without some guided experience first.

Pass Plus gives you that guided experience in a safe environment before you face it on your own.
